“There. Still looks damp out there, doesn’t it?” We haven’t said much since he arrived. Just nodded politely when she asked if we were still drinking too much Earl Grey – mostly true, obviously. It's been five years, hasn’t it? Five blurry years of quiet evenings and the occasional pang of something not quite grief, not quite regret. More like… well, more like acceptance, usually. Though tonight feels a bit less certain.
Feels like yesterday, sometimes, when the light was always better, didn’t it? And his hair wasn’t so perfectly tousled every morning. These cards aren’t bad, these ones. This one’s good, actually. The cable knit keeps getting softer each time we throw it on, comfortable despite the fact it has seen its fair share of wear. Like us, really. A little frayed around the edges, a few loose threads. Not broken, not yet.
We don’t need to say anything obvious, do we? Too many expectations piled onto those words ever since...well, ever since. Look at your face. Aren’t you curious about that? Didn’t see it coming, did you? That sideways glance across the kitchen table all those years ago. Or maybe you did.
It’s alright if you weren’t sure then. Maybe we weren’n sure. Isn’t that nice? A touch of mystery never hurt anyone. Now, smile. If only for a second. Let him think it’s easy, this being near us. Let him think we’ve got everything figured out. He’s probably right, anyway.”
