The wool is scratchy tonight, isn't it? Not unpleasant, not really - mostly comfortable. It has been for years, this comfort, this particular scratchiness. Like an old habit. See those lines around your eyes, then? We haven’t noticed them much lately, perhaps. Or maybe we’ve simply stopped wanting to. It was a while ago, wasn't it? The last time we truly did notice. A glass tooed, hadn’t it? That sherry, burnt almost, but good. Your hair was a bit wilder then, less willing to be tamed by memory.

We weren't arguing, exactly. Just...a stillness hanging out there, familiar enough to be comfortable, yet always with a subtle tension. As if expecting one of us to break it, any minute now. And sometimes, we did. Remember when it did? After that rather disastrous Christmas Eve, didn’t we? When you said yes, hesitantly, to come back. Everyone thought we were mad.

Now look at us. Here, in this room full of shadows and dust motes dancing in the light filtering through the windowpanes – probably why you agreed to this shoot anyway. Needed something other than the garden, didn’t you? Too many roses, perhaps, reminding you of everything perfectly fine.

See the way your hand rests near the edge of the table? Almost casual, isn’ so? Like nothing much matters except the weight of these sleeves, the slight pull of the ribbon on your scarf… Unless, of course, we admit it all does. Which we rarely do.

So, go ahead. Take another photo. Let the quiet settle. Perhaps, after all, that’s the point. Aren't you thinking about which dress to ask us about next?"
