“There. Another glass too many last night, probably. Not that anyone noticed much, really. Just the usual low hum of conversation, the clink of glasses, the faint scent of sandalwood and something vaguely familiar – maybe even your cologne, if you caught it right. It feels like ages since you did, doesn't it? Ages since you actually looked at us, not just through those ever so subtly critical eyes. We didn't fight, not exactly. More like drifted, for years now. Like rivers finding their way back to the sea, only the sea wasn’t always certain.”

A slight tilt of the head, a wrinkle of the nose - remembering the cold fireplace during that winter trip to Florence. “This scarf was yours, after all. A little frayed, perhaps – bit like everything else these days. Your mother gave it to you, remember? Said it would ward off the chill. We liked the chill, didn’t we?”

Silence hangs there, doesn’ed it? That comfortable, well-worn silence. The one where you used to know exactly what to say, without having to. Now sometimes it’s a little hesitant. As if you weren’t quite sure why you came. Or whether we wanted you to."

Our gaze meets yours. A flicker of recognition, a touch of trepidation. "So, look at us then. Don’t be shy. Didn’t think we’d stuck around forever, did you?"

A small upturn of the lip, that half-smile settles more firmly. "Now, about those photos…”
