“Right then.” A quiet sound, usually. That’s been enough for so long, hasn’t it? Just the rain against the glass, the muted tick of the clock downstairs...and always, always the question hanging in the air, though it rarely needs naming. Look familiar, don't you? Like a ghost in faded velvet. He said he liked this one, didn’t he? This picture. Said we looked happy, back when happiness hadn't felt quite so much like a carefully constructed memory."

"See the way the fingers are tucked into those sleeves? Comfortable,ish. Not quite snug, not too tight. Just right to keep out the chill, perhaps, but maybe more than that. Maybe to hide the trace of him, even after all these years.” We haven’ed seen each other in five. Five long ones, sometimes. Or less, depending on whether you count the Christmas where everyone forgot his name.”

“Your eyes were a bit wide last time, weren’t they? Remember? Slightly hesitant. Did you expect us to be blubbing?” We aren’t supposed to show much emotion, of course. Too vulnerable. But there was that flicker, wasn’t there? When we asked if you wanted tea.”

“We look good today, don’t we? A hint of a smile, a touch of gracefulness despite everything. No need to rush things, then. Take your time. It feels like ages since anyone ever did. Now, just stare for a minute longer…”
