Here you are then. Not quite surprised, not yet. That’s… nice. It has been a while. Too many a whiles, perhaps, when everything felt so perfectly poised for years - until it didn’t, did it? We always thought it was us, didn't we? Never really admitted it, of course. More comfortable with the quiet disaster than actually naming it.

These boots, anyway, they don’t care much either way. Leather, naturally, good quality. Still hold their shape well, even if the laces are starting to fray a little. Like us, maybe. A bit worn around the edges, but still holding together. This coat too, dark blue, classic. Though you might remember when it used to be brighter, hadn’t you? Lessens noticed, haven't they?

See the way you're standing there, a little hesitant. The hands tucked into the pockets, trying to look casual, as if this wasn’t happening every time. As if you weren’t staring back at the ghost of a smile we both swore we liked. Probably meant something, that smile. Maybe.

Thatched roof visible through the window behind you - dampness, always a hint of dampness. Just like those evenings spent by the fireplace, wrapped up warm, convinced nothing could touch us. Except ourselves, of course.

It feels like yesterday, doesn’– oh, alright, possibly more like ten years ago. But the point is, it hasn’t been ages. Look at you, adjusting your collar. Comfortable, aren’t you? Almost familiar.

Just one question, then. No need to answer immediately. We wouldn't want you to miss out on the silences. Now, breathe deep. And look at us."
