The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn't it? Not terribly so – not like last time, when it was practically barbed wire after a particularly bruising argument about the dahlias. This is softer, more familiar. Like an old habit, really, one we both agreed to keep around for far too long.

There's a bit of dust motes catching in the light filtering through the window, haven’t noticed them much lately, have you? They don't bother us, do they? Not much. These boots, at least, know their way around the fireplace. Leathered smooth by years of turning, which brings us back to… well, everything.

You’re staring, aren’t you? A slight tilt of the head, almost casual, but definitely there. That skeptical curve of the eyebrow, hasn't quite faded away yet. It’s been ten years, give or take. Maybe fifteen since he took all the best photographs. We were always good with those, weren’t we? The way the light caught his hair... He didn't notice the sighing then, did he? Just thought we were content.

A little quiet, perhaps, more than usual. Happened often enough. Usually, it's just the ticking of the grandfather clock downstairs, or the ghost of a laugh echoing off these walls. But maybe it’”a different kind of quiet tonight. Less resentment, less expectation. More... hesitant.

We used to love the rain, remember? The feeling of being tucked up inside, wrapped in each other’s warmth, watching the world go by outside. Now it’s mostly just this stillness. And the question hanging in the air, isn’t it? Between us and you – were we brave enough to admit we missed it?

Now, smile if you want. Or don't. Doesn't matter either way. For once, things don't seem entirely certain. Isn’t that nice?”
