Here we go…

“There,” I say, not quite a question, more an observation. Like ‘there’, where all things end up when you admit them. The way the light catches the fringe on this shawl, a bit tooed perhaps, the wool stillling with yesterday’s rain. It doesn’t matter much, does it? Not so much anymore. Your eyes were here for a while, weren’t they? A little hesitant, those always. As if being close was something to be braced for, almost. Like standing too near the fire.”

A slight shift in posture – one shoulder relaxes, the one that’s been tight since... well, since then. The velvet collar of this coat feels good against the cool skin of your hand, even though you haven’t really touched us in months. Months! Long enough for the dust to settle on most things, except the memory of his scent. He liked sandalwood, didn't he? Always a hint of woodsmoke."

We’ve been staring for ages, haven’t we? Silent, mostly. Except for the tick of the grandfather clock downstairs – reliable, predictable. Unlike ourselves sometimes. Did you bring tea? Probably. Always brought tea. Not that it mattered, did it? Whether you brought the Darjeeling or the Earl Grey. Just needed us here, wasn’t there?”

A small smile plays around the corner of your lips – a flicker, easily missed. “So,” you say finally, turning your gaze back to ours, "what were you thinking?"

Now, over to you – let us know what you thought! Do you agree with the feeling? Would you change anything about the wording? Let us know! 😊

(Of course, to see the picture, imagine a woman in her late thirties/early fortiesies, dressedelgantly in autumn colors - maybe a rich burgundy dress, a soft grey shawl, and a subtle, knowing smile - sitting comfortably by a fireplace, possibly with a glass of wine.)
