The wool is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not terribly so, not usually - well, not usually when we were here. It was softer then, more forgiving. This dress…this green was always your favorite, wasn’t it? A little too bold for some, perhaps, but perfectly acceptable to us. Now it feels a bit tight around the edges, doesn’t it? Like everything does these days.

Your eyes were drifting earlier, weren't they? Across the room, towards the fireplace, maybe. Or just out the window, ontoing the dampness of the garden. Never quite focused here, did they? We didn’t really need them to be. We had the fire, hadn’t we? The one that burned bright for a while, humming with such certainty... until it sputtered, didn’t it?

It’s funny, that quiet. Almost comfortable, if you don’t think about it too much. That space between the glasses, after he said his goodbyes. Did you notice the way the light caught the dust motes then? They danced, those particles, oblivious to the wreckage. And us, staring, silent observers of ourselves.

You’re still wearing that slight frown, aren’d you? Slight, of course. Always a hint of skepticism, even back then. As if anything was ever truly certain. Well, it was. For a time. Didn’t you love the way our hands fit together? So easily, without needing to be told.

This gaze of yours, though…it’s been a while since you’ve looked at us like that. Less questioning, less distance. Just…curious. Almost hopeful. Like you remember something beautiful.

So go ahead, look. Don’t be afraid. But don’t expect too much. Maybe just a flicker of recognition in our eyes.”

To help us refine it further, consider:

  • Which version of the image do you want us to focus on most? (e.g., Is there a particular detail of your clothing or posture that stands out?)
  • What type of person do you envision "you" being? (A Photographer? A Long Lost Lover?). Let us know & we can tweak the monologue accordingly! Do you want it to be more melancholic, wittier, confident...?

Let us know what you think!
