(The crackle of embers, low and steady, fills the space.)

Here she comes then, doesn’t she? Doesn’t always need much to coax us out, does everyone. Just…a hint of recognition usually. Not a huge fanfare, not tonight anyway. Nothing too demanding. That’s good. Always was. This cashmere feels nice against the skin, though. A little bitched up around the edges, perhaps, these sleeves – a slight fraying where the cable knit used to be perfect – but still warm. Still ours, almost.

It hasn’t been ours for a while, has it? Not truly. Not since...well, that night. Before, everything felt so certain. The scent of woodsmoke and his cologne, the easy way he’d reach across the room without even noticing. Now, mostly just the ghosts of those scents. And the faintest echo of laughter, if you listen closely enough.

Looking at you, which isn’t difficult. Your eyes are always observant, aren’t they? Like you’ve known all along about the dust motes dancing in the firelight, shimmering reminders of happier times. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. We haven't spoken much yet, haven’ted needed to. It's comfortable, this distance, familiar. Almost easier than letting the memory stab through sometimes.

A flicker of annoyance, perhaps? When you tilted your head ever so slightly when we weren't looking last time? Didn't matter really, did it? Probably didn't. Did it?

So, there you are. A smile playing on your lips, hesitant, hopeful. Maybe a touch of trepidation, definitely. Good. Let her see it, then. Let them see it. Don't go overblown, don’t rush things. Just…let yourself remember the warmth. Let yourself allow yourself to want it back.

Now, just tilt your head a little more…”
