The woollen scarf feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not really—it should be, after all, it’s cashmere, isn’t it?—but sometimes…sometimes it presses too much. Like he does. Like everything used to. Remember when “everything” wasn’t so many questions, was there? Just the scent of rain on damp pavement, his hand warm against ours during that storm over Bygdale...and now this. This awkwardness, draped around us both like a well-worn coat, except our coats aren’t quite asched here.
See the way the light catches the fringe? A subtle thing, usually. We always liked the light. It’s been ages since we noticed if it did, hasn't it? Though maybe that’s true of you. Maybe you were never entirely obvious. Still not, perhaps, unless you squinted. That particular wrinkle above the left eyebrow – haven’t seen that in years.
We didn’t think to mention the children last time. Shameful, isn’th that? Twenty-seven years passed, and only a silent agreement to smile politely at the annual Christmas card photo. And then this, didn’t expect it. The invitation came out of nowhere, wrapped in such delicate uncertainty.
Your eyes are bright, though. Always were. Even when you weren't looking. A flicker of recognition, maybe even a hint of guilt. Did you miss the way the moonlight caught the silver threads in our hair? Or was it more the memory of it than the actual strands themselves?
Don’t stare so intensely. It’s comfortable, isn't it? Almost familiar. Just remember to breathe, for once. And don’t fidget with the scarf. We’ve got until dusk.”
