The wool is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not that scratchy - not yet. It was softer when he chose it for Christmas ‘98, remember? That muted heather grey, perfectly understated. Like him, mostly. We always liked his taste in knitwear, didn't we? Though sometimes it felt less about liking the fabric and more about pleasinging - an effort, but a welcome one. Now there’s just...space. Always space used to be here, hasn’t there? Between us, usually. A comfortable distance, a well-worn path through the rose bushes.

Now it feels more like we’ve been standing too close, haven't we? The scent of rain on the pavement yesterday, faintly caught in the sleeve of this coat - did you notice? He probably noticed. He always notices things, eventually. Or so we thought.

You’re staring, aren’t you? Just a little bit. Not quite sure why. Probably thinking we look a bit rumpled, perhaps. This shawl has been fighting with its buttons all evening. No need to judge, though. We weren’t perfect then either, were we? Just a touch distracted by the way the light hit the fireplace, maybe.

That frown line around your mouth – faint, yes, easily missed. Almost as if you remembered. Before the argument, before the quietness settled in, before the acceptance that maybe, just maybe, everything was fine.
