Ephemeral Glitches in the Static

Ephemeral Glitches in the Static

The cafe’s ambient hum – a low-frequency resonance against my skull – usually grated, but tonight it was…filtered. A pleasing white noise masking the city's endless data stream.
He sat across from me, illuminated by the holographic projections flickering on the table - blueprints for a future he builds, I simply observe. His fingers danced over his datapad, sketching out algorithms that would reshape skylines, and in that moment, he wasn’t just an architect of steel and glass, but a sculptor of light.
I trace the line of my coffee cup with a fingertip; condensation beaded up like miniature glitches in reality. He looked up then, those eyes – analog warmth in a digital world - meeting mine. A micro-expression, almost imperceptible, softened his features.
He’d started coming to this cafe after our late-night virtual meetings, always finding an excuse for another cup of synth-coffee and a conversation that felt strangely…real.
Tonight, though, the air crackled with something new—a frequency shift in my internal systems. The city outside faded into static. And for the first time in years, I wasn’t running diagnostics to find the source of the interference; I was leaning in to explore it.
