He probably doesn’t even know if there were ever really two cups of tea, or if it was always more likely three.
These boots, for example. Well-worn, certainly. Leathered smooth by countless footsteps, most of them alone, through these rooms filled with dust motes and memory. They haven’t seen another soul in days, except maybe the occasional flicker of candlelight reflecting off the silver – inherited, naturally. A little ostentatious, some might say. But who cares about that? We used to love the way the light caught the sheen.
Your gaze isn’t terrible, not yet. A touch hesitant, yes. Like you remember something, a feeling almost, but weren't quite brave enough to name it. Maybe you expected a smile, all those years ago, when the music was playing louder and the wine flowed easier than resentment.
It hasn’t been bad, not truly, living here alone. Comfortable, even. Though sometimes, late at night, when the rain tracks along the windowpanes and the fire dies down low, you can almost smell his absence. Or is that just the lavender from the bath oil?
We never did speak about it, after all. Didn', t we? Too painful. So here you are, standing just outside the frame of our lives, peering in. Perhaps a hint of curiosity, perhaps guilt. Doesn’t matter.
Just hold your breath, for once. And look longer.”
