Here goes…

“There it is, then,” I murmur, voice a little dustier than we remembered. It always was, wasn't there? That particular note of dryness. Not quite resentment, not yet. More... expectation held back. For years, really. Maybe decades. Feels shorter than that sometimes, doesn't it? Like those summersed days spent by the lake - hazy around the edges, perfect even when we didn’t realize it.

Notice the silk scarf, hasn’t that? A bit frayed at the edge, a subtle trace of indigo clinging to the cream. Your favorite shade. Ours. Didn't notice it had been worn for so long, did you? Probably too busy staring, which we both did. At each other, mostly. Or maybe at the way the light used to catch the water.

Your eyes—they haven’t changed much, have they? Still blue, still a touch wary. Though perhaps less so today. The scent of rain on leather, faintly, yours. We were out riding, weren't we? Just after the storm. Remember the mud? Perfected the technique of letting go, didn’t we? Almost forgot about that, all these years.

It was your fault, of course. Always our fault. No need to say it, though. Nothing ever needs saying, does it? Just look at you, standing there, hesitant, curious. Perhaps a flicker of recognition, a ghost of a smile almost reached.

A small sigh escapes, and it’, s gently drifting outwards. Take that, world. Here we are.”
